The Clare Valley is 136 kilometres north of Adelaide.

The township of Clare was named after County Clare in Ireland and was so named by its founder Edward Burton in 1842.

The history of this region is nearly as long as that of the nearby Barossa Region. The first vineyard, at Sevenhill, was planted by Jesuits in the 1840's and is still in production.

Clare today is a vibrant rural town and regional centre. It has a diverse local economy of grape growing, wine production, broad acre farming and tourism.

The annual Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend, held each May for over 20 years, is a major event that attracts food and wine lovers from afar. By far the most important wine grape grown in the district is the riesling with the Clare Valley dominant for its riesling wines in Australia.

Harvest commences in early March and finishes, typically, with riesling coming in last in late April.

Clare has become recognised for its 'experiences', including the famed Riesling Trail walking and cycling route between Clare and Auburn (25km), on the former railway line.

Near by, Burra was established in 1845 when copper was discovered and until 1877 was one of the world's most important copper mines and is now a rural service centre for a farming and grazing community and tourist attraction focussed on its mining heritage.

Blyth was named in 1860 after Sir Arthur Blyth, who was one of the earliest statesmen in South Australia and was Premier on three occasions. The Blyth Plains were initially part of a huge pastoral run before the Blyth Township was laid out on Section 198 in 1875 with the railway line bisecting the town.

The township of Auburn was established in 1849 and was first known as Tateham's Waterhole. It is commonly known as 'The Gateway to the Clare Valley' and is rich in history and heritage buildings. As early as 1839, in South Australia's infancy as a colony, pioneers grazed sheep and cattle in the district.

There are over 40 wineries in the Clare Valley to explore with a huge variety of accommodation options and you'll always find a warm and friendly welcome from the "locals". Accommodation varies from backpackers accommodation through to resort style.
